Last week, we opened our eyes to some Toastmaster habits that may seem odd to the rest of the world: all the applause, the tendency to evaluate bosses and dates, the obsession over speech topics, etc. Are we an odd bunch? Perhaps. But the fact is that we have a great time together, just like we did this week.
We enjoyed Lora as Table Topics Master. She asked Robin to explain the Toastmaster secret handshake. She asked Patrick R. to deliver an elevator speech on Toastmasters. Finally, she asked Charles to explain the brilliance behind his method for coming up with speech topics.
One of the best things about Toastmasters is that we are constantly growing our membership. New membership means we get to enjoy icebreakers. Though sometimes stressful for the first time speech giver, ice breakers are a Toastmasters favorite. Brad managed to survive his unscathed, though that is apparently not true for the previous umpteen years of his life. He told us about the numerous injuries that made him the man he is today. Brad, we’re thrilled you’ve survived your life so far and so thankful that you’ve chosen to be one of us.
Another relatively new member, Russell, delivered a speech on three things people should be doing in Austin. He encouraged everyone to volunteer for a nonprofit, ride a bike as much as possible to promote clean and healthy living, and become a fan of the University of Texas, not just for football but because of the wonderful things UT does for this community. Russell, you too are a gift to this club. Thanks for making it your Toastmasters home.
Finally, we had the pleasure of previewing Jerry Alyathural’s contest speech. Jerry is the son of our beloved Vic and came to us from Connecticut to practice his speech. Honk your purpose. State your intention and go do it. That was his message, and we were lucky to get to see what Toastmasters in other parts of the country are doing with their speeches. Thank you, Jerry, and thank you, Vic for bringing Jerry to our club.
We may be an odd bunch, but we learn something new each week and enjoy our hour together. After all, if we aren’t having a good time, what’s the point?
