Amy, our mentor coordinator, sets up all new members with a mentor when they join the club. Find her at a meeting to ask any questions about the mentoring program!
Basically, a mentor is a more experienced member who takes a personal interest in and helps another member. Mentors serve as role models, coaches, and confidantes, offering knowledge, insight, perspective and/or wisdom useful to the other member. A mentor can help a new member become familiar with our club or can assist a more experienced member in learning special skills.
Anyone can be a mentor…
How to Be a Mentor in 5 Easy Steps
1. Say “Yes! I will be a mentor!”
2. Meet with your assigned new member and ask questions:
- “Why did you join Toastmasters?”
- “What are your goals?”
3. Shepherd your new member through their first three speeches, in person, by phone, or via e-mail:
- Help your new member brainstorm
4. Guide your new member through their first three meeting roles:
- Help them through the manuals – you’re an expert!
5. If your new member misses a few meetings, call to see what’s up:
- “What’s going on?”
- “Do we smell bad?”
A mentor is simply a helpful, supportive friend!!
