Wendy’s evil twin, Cindy, claimed the lectern this week. We all know Wendy is smart, beautiful and charming. You might say that Cindy is wicked smart, wicked beautiful and wicked charming.
Jenny tortured Corky, Carol and Jason with Table Topics. Corky explained that Jenny didn’t need to ever replenish her candy bowl on Halloween night; instead, she could take a lesson from Obama and just look in the bags of all of the kids at her door and take candy from those who had lots and give it to those who had less. Carol confessed that she would lie lie lie if caught toilet papering the home of her boss. Jason made up a tale about someone toilet papering his parents’ house on Halloween and sending his mom into labor. Truth be told, he just wanted everyone to know his birthday was November 1. (Though this recap is late, feel free to send him birthday wishes.)
Then came the speeches. Susana delivered a speech on groundwater law. Given the subject matter, we expected it to be dull dull dull but she threw in such humor and personality that some of us asked her to email us the article she wrote on the subject. Then Louis helped out the club by stepping in as a substitute speaker and educated us on how to listen in the now using the CRABE method: contact (making it), rapport (accepting the other person), attending (focusing on the speaker), behaviors (such as repeating statements made or asking for clarification), and encouragement. Thanks to Keith and Amy for their active participation and role playing.
Bert acted as general evaluator, while Albert and Patrick evaluated the speakers. Tips we can all benefit from: (1) remember that every speech is an icebreaker of sorts, (2) be willing to experiment and have fun while speaking, (3) be passionate about the subject matter, and (4) be creative with and not bound by the manuals.
With the additional help of Marsha, Maureen and Taline, we had another fun and spirited (though not in the spooky sort of way) meeting at what Cindy inadvertently (we think) called ”Capital Titty Toastmasters.” For those who didn’t make it, know that you were missed.
