Go, go Gadget!

Amy led this technologically retro meeting on gizmos and gadgets.  Leeanne hosted the table topic questions with Taline, Erin, and Lee fielding various questions about their favorite gadgets.  Evidently animate objects in the kitchen need to be excluded from consideration.  Erin gave some us some more insight into her personality by talking about Post It Notes and Lee has upgraded from Duct Tape 1.0 to Duct Tape 2.0 (e.g. Double Sided Velcro).  All TT’ers did a wonderful job.

Carol gave a speech entitled “Fifteen Pounds”, a persuasive effort in highlighting the virtues of living a low salt life.  She cited various statistics to support her position such as the average bowling ball weighs 15 pounds and that is the average yearly amount of salt Americans consume.  From personal example, it appeared like an easy change to make in one’s life in a short time and benefit from greatly over the long term.

Bert gave us an elevator speech about a business idea he is working on and brought an acquantance along for the short elevator ride.  The speech was technical and involved a patented gadget that would be of interest to companies that want to reduce their electronic component total cost of ownership by adding in a layer of predictability from this gadget.  He then opened the floor for a Q&A session.

Holly returned from her sabbatical to give us a funny fact finding (this is one of those few times you will see these 3 F’s together) speech about taste buds and “super tasters.”  Was it an effort to legitimize picky eaters?  Possibly – but this was backed up with witty personal references, a phenyl-something-or-other-please-don’t-make-me-pronounce-it-chemical, and a healthy dose of statistics.  Thankfully everyone that fit into her categories were in comfortably-large groups of 25-50%.  How often is it that a toastmaster gets a standing ovation?  We clap all the time, but reserve the standing ovations for special occasions.
