Last week, Capital City Toastmasters had its annual Valentine’s Day Battle of the Sexes. Men against women. Women against men. No holds barred. Who won? Who do you think?
More women than men played roles in this meeting. Rey opened the meeting because Keith was late. Amy acted as toastmaster. Zahra acted as timer. Rey acted as table topics master. Leeanne acted as general evaluator. On the men’s side, Louis handled the invocation and Brendan acted as grammarian. Had we awarded a prize for overall participation, women would have won it.
As for table topics, women, represented by Wendy, Lora, and Susana, soundly beat the men, represented by Patrick, Kirk and Ben. Did we mention that the Wendy who took a table topic was not Wendy our VP of Membership, but was in fact a guest. Even our women guests rule.
Women soundly won the evaluations category. Our veteran Wendy kicked the behind of Stuart, our Grumpy Old Man Man.
Best Humor and Most Enthusiastic also went to the women. There are so many reasons why. Maybe everyone loved Amy’s boxing gloves or Rey’s unusual approach to table topics and the prizes she awarded. Perhaps it was Jenny’s brilliant commentary on the Muslim and Buddhist faiths. Or Zahra’s sharp and sassy delivery of the timer’s reports.
Maybe the men were too busy feeding their juvenile tendencies with all their “farding” through the meeting. That a man introduced that word to the club is no more of a surprise than all the fun the men had with it.
Oh and did we mention that of our seven guests, four of them were women?
In their one and only victory of the day, the men took the speech category. Lee gave his icebreaker. Jenny educated us on everything she knows about Iran, the country of her fiance’s heritage. Lee, this one victory was our official welcoming of you to this club. You delivered an awesome ice breaker. We’re happy to have you with us. But know this: next year, we will show you no such mercy.
Women rule.
